DEath List (W.I.P.) by C.S.R.
The room was almost completely black, and all I could hear was the sound of dripping water and screams. I don’t want to die. I thought to myself, but then suddenly, the door opened and IT came in. Please God save me! I prayed in my head, hoping for something to happen. Then, everything went black.
I gasped as I rose from the table I fell asleep on. I then ducked my head and muttered “No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.” I then counted how many times I said no and realized it was ten times.
“Hey Cailin,” Kenny said to me. “Glad to see you’re back with the living. So did you have another dream?” His innocent green eyes stared right in my brown ones. His name was Kenny James Berk; he was applied with brown hair that was slightly messy with a little ponytail in the back. He was a cop and was one of the nicest guys I knew.
“Oh Cailin, please say no!” Rin begged. Her name was just Rin and she was the youngest of our group of eleven. Her hair was long, black, and messy, the same color of her eyes. She would have been an orphan if her big brother hadn’t been over eighteen. I’m not sure what happened to their parents; I just know that her brother works for some charity company and they’re Japanese. “Whenever you have a dream, it’s one of your psychic vision thingies, and this one looks worse than that time Blossom almost got hit by a car, but you thought she did because you woke up before the-”
“RIN!” Blossom yelled at the young girl. “Will you be quiet for five minutes! As I recall, my ankle got ran over, so I technically did get hit! You also sound annoying whenever you open your trap.” Her name was Blossom Veitnie and she had spiky black hair with purple streaks; she tried convincing us it was her real hair. Blossom’s eyes were a strange color of pure yellow. She was now stuck on crutches until she had surgery to attach an artificial foot onto her right ankle. To me, her life without us was a mystery.
Brody then cut in and said with a Liverpool accent, “She means yer cakehole Rin.”
“Oh, like I understand what you mean by cakehole.”
“Mouth!” He then turned towards me and asked, “So wa’ wuz yer dream about?” His name was Brody Daniel Collins and his hair was orange and spiky, with oval green eyes. He was a carpenter like his father who had taught him since he was very young.
Ana then said, “You are being insensitive Brody. Cailin looks as though she escaped from the clutches of death himself. If you don’t want to talk about it you don’t have to, sweetie.” She put her arm on me. Her name was Ana Nina Claventime and she was a tomboy, with short blonde hair, which she put into a ponytail. Her eyes seemed to always change color. Everyone could tell Kenny was crushing on her. Ana was the daughter of a very rich guy, a politician or something, I just met him once, but he is really nice.
“Why do you baby her?” Gandriff asked Ana before I could say anything. He too had only a first name and spiky orange hair but he had blue eyes that seemed to have no pupils. People said he had a crush on me, but I unfortunately didn’t feel the same. I was always afraid of hugging him because he was so tall and thin like a twig. He was some millionaire or something. Honestly, no one in our group, but him, really knew.
“Because she is my baby.” She looked at me like she was expecting me to say one of my lines.
I took a deep breathe and said, “Yay, I’ve been adopted again,” with no enthusiasm in my voice at all.
“Whoa! Was that monotone I heard? Now I am even more curious about your dream.”
“I think I died.”
“What?” Rin said confused. “Maybe you didn’t, like with the Blossom dream.”
“Or,” Blossom reentered the conversation, “it was in the far future this time.”
“I am confused.” I said feeling like tearing up. “I was scared. I’m never scared of death, but I really didn’t want to die. I think I heard Ana screaming for her life, right before the killer came to kill me. The beginning of the dream was me lying on the floor of a dark room, but for some reason I know who died first, and the order of everyone’s death after that. I also know how they died, except for me. I also don’t know who killed us.”
“Really? Details please.”
Gandriff cut back in, “I would rather not know. Some things just should not be known, especially when it comes to death.”
“Are you scared that you’re the first one Gandy?”
“No, and do not call me Gandy.”
Ana then said, “At least she isn’t calling you Candy.”
“OH!” Kenny stood up with an idea. “I have an idea! How about Cailin writes down the order of the deaths and how it happened. Then she seals it shut in an envelope that we hide it, so that when we think it’s time that we need it, we will just open it.”
“What is this?” Rota came up to the group. He pushed back his long, red, spiky hair and said, “I’m guessing little Cailin had another dream. Why do you all seem so happy about dyeing, because that’s what it sounds like to me?” He also had one word in his name but his hair was actually red with blue and black streaks. Rota’s eyes were solid red like his hair. He had a secret gay lover we couldn’t identify, but we all respected his privacy. He was half Japanese and a fourth American and Chinese. We didn’t know what his job was.
“Ooh!” Natasia said with her sexy Russian accent, clinging onto Rota’s arm. “Die? We all died? How very interesting. More information please.” She was named Natasia Eltsov and she was a Russian, sexy, hardcore bitch, who didn’t take crap from anyone. She was as tall as Rota without her heels, so those two were the tallest and oldest of our group. Honestly, Natasia had to be the most mysterious of us all.
“Woman, get off me!” He shook her off his arm.
Miko slipped passed the two that started to quibble, holding onto Take’s arm, and said, “What exactly is going on here?” Take Kiyuzi-Tiro and Miko Abara had been a couple for a while. Baby T took a while to realize she was lesbian and M was just bi-curious, but now she was content with her girlfriend. They were the only ones’ with nicknames. Take was full-blooded Japanese, with long black hair and black eyes; she actually was a martial arts instructor. Miko was also Japanese with semi-long black hair and pure white eyes. Her parents ran a shrine and she just went around and picked part time jobs wherever she could.
Take said, “Death is a serious thing. It is no joking or laughing matter.”
“S-sorry Take,” Kenny pleaded. People thought Take was sensitive about death because her real parents were dead and her foster parents died when she was four.
“That’s okay. I shouldn’t have snapped.”
“Da,” Natasia replied. “You are right. You overreacted. Death is actually a beautiful, magnificent thing.”
“Although I take death lightly,” Rota said, “you are not making anything better Natasia.”
“Yeesh,” Miko commented on Natasia. “What are you? Emo? Goth?”
Natasia took a smoke from her fancy cigarette, “Do not be ‘udgmental.”
“I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on here.”
“Cailin had another dream,” Ana answered. “And she’s really spooked.
“We all die.” I replied very bluntly. “I was just about to make a death list, and then I was going to copy one for everyone. I’m going to spoil it a little and hand you your deaths in order.”
“Aw.” Natasia pretend to whine. “Taking the fun out of it.” Natasia then leaned over to Rota and whispered, “Don’t you think she is being gloomy?”
“She always gets this way after a psychic vision,” Miko leaned in to answer Natasia, “even if it was a good one.”
It was true. I always seemed depressed after my visions. I felt so strange, like another person. I took my laptop out of my bag and took a deep breath. I opened my Mac and made a list called the DEath List on a Microsoft Word file.
“Hey,” Rin butted her head next to mine. “Why are D and E both capitalized in ‘death?’”
Ana also put her head next to mine on the other side. “It kind of adds effect.” I stopped typing so I didn’t spoil anything.
“Hey you two!” Miko hissed. “Stop looking at the DEath List!”
“Oh! Sorry.” Ana moved away.
Gandriff put his hand on Rin’s kimono collar and pulled her back saying, “You too Rin.”
Rin let out a little whine and I started to type again. Pretty soon I was done, so I saved the document and closed the screen.
Rota then acted like he was suspicious saying, “So why are we putting our lives in your hands? How do we know that we even do die? You said yourself the dream only had you in it. Doesn’t that mean some-”
“Correction!” Ana interrupted Rota. “She also heard me screaming. And if you for one second were about to accuse Cailin of being a killer, I would throw you down to the ground right here, and right now.” Ana stood up to Rota.
“Bring it kid. You don’t scare me.” Rota glared down at Ana.
“Knock it off you too!” Kenny ran in between the two, using his hands to push them away from each other. “I think all this talk about us dying is just putting you guys on edge. We just need to calm down.”
“Rota’s got a point though!” Rin sided with Rota. “Why would anyone want to kill us?! I’m scared Kenny!”
“How can you be on his side?!” Ana roared furiously. “He is treating Cailin like garbage! She’s never done anything wrong to us! In fact, she is always saving us!”
I put my arm on Ana’s shoulder to calm her down. “It’s alright Ana. I understand why they would think something’s up.” I tried hiding the fact I was scared too, but Ana and Kenny and everyone else could look in my eyes and see the fear that corrupted them.
“Aw shit.” Rota said sounding a bit guilty. Rin also looked down to the ground in guilt. “I guess I should apologize.”
“N-no! That’s okay!”
“No it’s not you pushover. Stop accepting peoples’ apologies, believing people don’t have to apologize, and stop apologizing! The last one’s the most annoying. ‘I’m sorry.’ ‘Gasp, I am so sorry.’ ‘Sorry.’ People are going to think sorry is your favorite word.”
“Well I’m sor-well I just can’t help it. I’m damned to apologize for eternity or somethin’. My mom just raised me with manners and I’ve become socially awkward over the years.” I started to smile and giggle since my little depressed episode was over. “Sorry, I apologized for giggling for no reason. “I’m just a bit happy because I’m not all down anymore. I need to get home and print this out.”
“Someone should go with you.”
“Well,” Ana said conjuring up a plan, “I would say we should split up evenly, but there’s eleven of us so five and six should be a good idea. Six of us should go with Cailin while the other five finish up here and pay the bill, and come later.” I thought this to be good thinking. We luckily all lived together in an old big apartment building that Gandriff bought and used as a house. We started living with him after our friendship developed; of course he made us pay rent too though. It was strange because my visions actually brought us together. “Brody, Kenny, Rota, Take, and Miko, you guys should go with Cailin since you are all done eating.”
I then gasped and whispered Brody’s name, remembering something important.
“I hate it when you take charge brat. But whatever. I’m going.” Rota moved away from the group and Kenny followed. Take and Miko started to walk away, so Kenny, Rota, and I did too. I looked back at Brody who seemed a little confused and then he started to pace after us.
“See you guys soon. Be safe…please.” I then turned around and continued walking. The walk to our house was very brief, which was the reason for eating at the place we were, well, at. The six of us entered and I went straight to my room where my printer was. I started to print out eleven copies but my printer started acting like a brat so it took longer than needed. It was very scary when I had visions of things happening at the time of the event. It felt so real, like I was watching it on TV or like I was in the very room as that person. I only had those visions if I was asleep though. For some reason, watching the printer was making feel very drowsy and I soon got sleepy. I couldn’t help it, so I shut my eyes and took a little nap.
“‘ey Cailin?” I heard Brody call out from the darkness. I turned around and saw him walking down the hallway.
“Wait Brody!” I tried to call out. I just knew something bad was going to happen. And though it seemed like Brody was right in front of me, like I could touch him, it was impossible for him to hear me because I wasn’t really there.
Brody kept walking until he reached my which was opened at a crack. “Yous in e’yer?” He peeked through and saw me napping at my desk. “’mm…maybe ay should wake ‘er.” He put his hand on the doorknob and was about to push it over.
“No Brody! Don’t! I don’t know why not! I just know something bad is going to happen!” But no matter how loud I screamed, it was a dream, and he could not hear me.
Brody continued to open the door. Suddenly we heard a click noise and an axe came swinging down from the ceiling slicing off half of his head. The top that was cut off slipped towards the wall and hit the floor. Pretty soon his body knelt to the ground and fell over. The rode the axe was hanging from snapped and dropped into Brody’s back.
“Br-Brody…Brody!” I floated over to his body and looked around, seeing so much blood.
“NO!” I screamed awakening from my horrifying dream. I was gasping and panting. I realized I could smell blood and how real that dream was. “Oh no.” I didn’t want to turn around. I knew if I did, all I would find was Brody’s gruesome body. “No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.” I muttered the word no nine times. I think and realize such strange things. I started to think. I need to look. Stop being a coward. I finally gathered courage and spun my chair around. It was true. Brody was dead. In the background, I could hear people running to my room after hearing me scream when I awoke. Kenny finally made it close to Brody’s body.
“What happened?!” Kenny said astonished. Rota came from the other side with Take and Miko following him. The girls gasped and Miko buried her face in Take’s shoulder.
“What the fuck happened?” Rota leered at Brody’s body. His eyes then found their way to mine.
“I was asleep.” I started to tear up, knowing that if I was awake there was a chance I could have saved Brody. “I was having a dream of Brody dying, and I woke up to this. It’s exactly the same as my dream. There was an axe trap and it sliced off half his head. It happened right in front of me. I didn’t save him and I knew he was going to be the first.” I pointed at the printer that had the copies of the DEath List. “Go ahead. Take a look for yourself.”
Kenny inched towards the printer, gently tip-toeing over Brody’s body. He picked up the DEath List.
“I fell asleep while they were printing.” I started crying, using my hands to cover up my face as I curled up in a ball on the chair. “What have I done?”
Kenny moved over to me so he could put his hand on my back. “Sh. It’s okay Cailin. This isn’t your fault. Someone must have broken in and set up that trap while you were asleep.”
“Oh hey.” Rota said looking down at the axe, he grabbed the handle and pulled it out.
“Don’t touch that!” Kenny jumped at him. “Too late. That was evidence you dumb ass.”
“Well whoever did this most likely was smart enough to wear gloves, don’t you think? I find this to be gruesome humor though,” Rota twirled the axe like it weighed nothing. He showed us an emblem of a heart with a crown on it where the blade was. “Alice in Wonderland. ‘Off with her head!’ Well in this case, his head.” He sort of chuckled.
“Have you no respect for the dead?!” Take barked at Rota. “Brody is dead. That’s no joke.”
“Save it wanna be samurai.” He looked at the axe again. “I think I’m keeping this thing.” He moved over to the printer and grabbed all of the DEath Lists. “Here.” Rota waved them in front of Take and Miko. Eventually the girls grabbed them from him. “Did you get yours?” He said looking back at me. I shook my head so he turned and gave me one. “Look kid, it’s going to be okay, no one blames you for this.”
“No it’s not.” I said as though I was possessed. It was scary enough to make Rota flinch. “W-we should call everyone, let them know what happened. And the cops!”
“I am a cop and I know that it could be a bad idea to call 9-1-1.” Kenny replied.
Miko then stomped her foot in question, “What?!”
Rota was a bit confused and asked, “Why?”
Kenny looked down at his list. “Lets just say this looks very suspicious. Were all standing around here holding list telling us details of our deaths, and you are carrying around the very axe that killed the first victim.”
“I didn’t realize we would start dying so soon.” I said standing up. “I’m gonna call the Ana.” I pulled out my cell phone.
“Take,” I overheard Miko saying to her girlfriend. “I don’t feel very well.”
“Alright.” She replied. “I’ll take you to our room so you can get some rest.” The two started walking off.
“Hello?” Ana’s voice asked in my ear. “Cailin?”
“Oh! Ana. Hi. I…uh…I…”
“What’s up? We are heading home right now. Did something happen?”
“Brody’s dead.” Once more I said something dark with a blunt voice.
“What?!” I heard Ana turn to whisper the news to the rest of the group.
“He died the way my DEath List said he would. I fell asleep while your copies were printing and I dreamt of him dying, and I awoke to his corpse. I’m sorry. I couldn’t save him.”
“We’re here right now. Are you sure the killer isn’t still in the house?”
“We don’t even know the answer to that.”
“Shit. I guess it doesn’t matter at this point. The monster that did this is bound to be close by. I am going to hang up now since we are entering the house. Okay?”
“Look sweetie, I know what that voice is. It’s self-blame. Please don’t blame your-“
Suddenly the phone call was cut off and I was a little alarmed. “Ana? Ana?! Hello?! Ana?!”
“Sorry.” Ana said as she came by the room. “Our front door has bad service for some reason.” She looked down at Brody and shut her eyes very tight. She took a deep breath to calm herself. “I’m gonna kill them. I am going to kill the son of a bitch who killed Brody.”
Blossom crept up behind Ana. “They really went all out didn’t they?” Rota leaned over to hand the girls their lists.
“Where’s everyone else?” He asked.
“Natasia is bringing Rin to her room.” Gandriff said coming from the other side of the hallway grabbing a list from Rota. “She’s just a kid so we thought it would be best for her not to see this.”
“Then can you give these to them?” Rota said, trying to hand two more lists to Gandriff.
“Do it yourself.”
“No. I can’t stand that psychotic bitch.”
“I’ll do it.” I said taking the two DEath Lists from Rota.
“That’s right.” Rota looked down at his hand where he had two more lists. “We have an extra list because Brody is dead. I’ll juts give it to him anyway.” Rota put the second last list on Brody’s back. “I’ll give him this back too.” He then laid the axe to the corpse.
“You took that out of his back?!” Ana barked.
“What? I know I wouldn’t want an axe in my back for eternity.”
Ana just shook her head at him.
“I’m going downstairs to check on Rin and Natasia.” I said creeping past them.
I walked to the staircase and trudged down them. When I was on the first floor, I went to the third door on the left. I opened it and saw Natasia lying over the covers, holding Rin in her arms. Rin was under the covers and clung to Natasia like she was her mother. Natasia actually had confessed to me one day that she was pregnant and she was going to try being a mother to Rin so she could have practice. She wanted to keep her pregnancy a secret. Natasia wasn’t sleeping around or anything, she was engaged, and her fiancé was the baby’s father.
“Hi.” I said, walking inside the doorway. “Hope I’m not intruding on anything.”
“Oh no dear. You were not.” Natasia stood up. “Would you take care of Rin for me?” I could tell she was anxious to see Brody.
“Of course.” I then pulled out a DEath List for her and stretched my arm out to her. “Here. It’s your DEath List.”
“Thank you.” She kissed my forehead and left the room after taking her lists.
“Hey Rin.” I went to the bed and lay next to her. “You okay.”
“Is Brody really dead?” She asked with her piercing eyes.
“Yes sweetie.” I gently put her list on the blankets. “This is yours.”
“Thanks…I guess.” Rin leered at the back of the paper and then put it on her nightstand. “Can you stay with me for awhile?”
I slowly nodded my head as I relaxed next to the child. She cuddled up to my body and rubbed her face in my large chest. Soon, we both drifted off into a slumber. And again, I started to dream.
When I looked around the darkness I heard Miko moaning, as though she had just awoken. “Take?” She asked, sitting up. She thought she heard someone in her room which made its design around me. She moaned again, holding her head because she was dizzy from sitting up to fast. “Is anyone there?” But no one answered. I could smell gasoline. “What smells like gas?” She slowly looked around.
“Miko get up.” I called to her. “Miko! You’re not alone! Someone else is in here! Get out! It’s not safe!”
“Who dies next I wonder.” She said making her way to the list. Her eyes glanced at the paper and she gasped. We both flinched as we heard the sound of a match spark. “No!” Miko tried getting up, but felt to weak. I watched someone in the shadows flick the match onto her bed, but I couldn’t see the murderer.
“Miko!” Take banged on the door. “Miko are you awake?! You have to get out of the bed now!” My guess is that she too had just read the DEath List. “Shit.” She then kicked the door open.
“Take!” Miko called to her lover. She had already gotten burned all over her body. “I can’t get up! AH!” She screamed in agony. The fire was burning her legs and arms. Whoever was in the room had already escaped from the flames.
“Miko!” Take was almost at tears knowing that she was unable to save her girlfriend. She ran through the flames, ignoring the pain scorching her body. She sat next to Miko holding her.
“Run. Save yourself.”
“I’m not leaving you Miko. I won’t let you die alone.” Then they were quiet and said no more. The two held each other as the room around them burned to the ground. I looked away for almost a second and when I looked back, I saw they were beyond help.
“I need to wake up! I need to tell the others so they don’t die too!” I turned around and saw Gandriff, Ana, and Kenny.
“Get a fire extinguisher!” Kenny yelled.
Then Rota came dashing over with one in his hands.
I quickly sat up, alarming Rin who I just awoke. “Oh no! No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.” But I muttered the word no eight times, this time.
“Cailin?!” Rin grabbed my shoulder. “What’s the matter?! Did you have another dream?!”
I looked down at her and felt tears come up.
“Oh no.” Rin picked up her paper. “Was it Take and Miko?”
I put my head down to say yes. “They burned to death in each others arms.”
“So you know already?” Natasia said, standing in the doorway. “It’s kind of romantic in a way. Let me guess, Take said she wouldn’t let her die alone. I was with her right before she ran off. She looked down at the list and totally freaked out. As soon as I knew what was up, I told Rota to get an extinguisher.”
“It’s still sad.”
“You know who’s next right?” I couldn’t look at her face. “He’s gonna die for you. Do you happen to be thirsty?” I slightly nodded my head. “Do you think you can hold your thirst until a long while, like tomorrow?” I shrugged my shoulders. “If you can break the pattern, it’s possible to save everyone else. Maybe I should shoot someone who doesn’t have to die yet, ‘ust to save everyone else. You know what I mean?”
“You bitch!” Rin yelled, contaminating her innocent mouth. “Get out of my room!”
“Fine.” She started to walk away, but she turned back to say, “It was just a suggestion.” Then Natasia continued to walk out.
“Who does she think she is?! For all we know, she could be the murderer! Did you hear the way she was talking?! She sounded so heartless and inhuman. I’m scared Cailin. I’m really, truly scared. Being close to the bottom of the list makes you paranoid thinking anytime now…I…I just don’t know what to-“
I held Rin gently in my arms saying, “Sh. Calm yourself Rin. It’s going to be alright.” I lied through my teeth.
“No it’s not!” Rin pulled away from me. “We’re all gonna die!”
“We all will die.” I said coldly. “One day, maybe not today, we will die. It’s just the way things are.”
